Foreign Minister, Li Zhaoxing, says China will continue to make friends with other countries, and follow the road of peaceful development. Speaking at a press conference at the National People's Congress, Li also stressed that Taiwan Independence cannot be tolerated.

In April, Hu Jintao will make his first state visit to the United States as Chinese president.

Foreign Minster Li Zhaoxing says Hu Jintao and George W. Bush have reached important consensus on promoting the Sino-US constructive cooperative relationship in the 21st century.

He noted the success of coordination and cooperation in economy, trade, anti-terrorism, non-proliferation, the nuclear standoffs on the Korean Peninsula and in Iran, UN reform and curbing bird flu.

He said: "I think China and the United States have comprehensive common interests. With the joint efforts by the two of us, based on the three Joint Communique principles, ten and twenty years from now, the friendly cooperative relationship will be more fruitful."

Li also addressed sensitive areas, especially the Taiwan issue. The foreign minister reiterated there is only one China in the world, and Taiwan is a part of China.

He said: "Taiwan issue is the biggest factor affecting the Sino-US relations. We hope the US can insist on the three Joint Communiques, clearly realize the Taiwan secessionist forces and their danger, send no wrong signals to the Taiwan secessionists, and maintain peace and stability across the Straits and healthy Sino-US relations."

Li stressed although the Chinese government will show its utmost sincerity and efforts to achieve peaceful reunification, it will not tolerate Taiwan Independence nor allow the breakaway of Taiwan by any people, by any means.

The Foreign Minister emphasized China will keep following the road of peaceful development. He said China is a member of the family of developing countries, who share similar historical misfortunes, face same challenges and have common interests.

Enhancing cooperation with other developing nations is a fundamental of China's foreign policy. China will do its best to provide them economic and political help. China is willing to be good friends and good partners with developing countries, as well as the rest of the world, and make contributions to world peace.

He said: "The Chinese are firmly insisting on peaceful development. China is forever a force for maintaining peace and promoting common development. China's development is by no means the threat to any country. Quite the contrary, China's development is creating more and more opportunities for other countries' development."

Li Zhaoxing said development saw more than 31 million Chinese go abroad during the past year. But this has also meant increased danger, such as the recent killing of three Chinese engineers in Pakistan.

Li said Chinese foreign officers will continue to provide immediate help to their nationals abroad. He advised Chinese in foreign countries to learn and obey local laws, and respect local customs and traditions to help ensure their safety.
